A Traffic Engineer is responsible for designing, creating and optimizing transportation systems. They develop plans that aim to increase safety and reduce traffic congestion on highways, roads and streets. A Traffic Engineer analyzes traffic patterns, studies traffic flow data and conducts surveys to understand traffic problems and potential construction solutions.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement traffic management systems that optimize traffic flow, reduce congestion and increase safety;
- Survey roads and highways to determine traffic patterns;
- Manage traffic light systems software, identify problems and adjust timing systems when necessary;
- Collaborate with other traffic engineers, city officials and developers to plan and complete transportation projects;
- Analyze traffic data to identify trends to further improve traffic flow and safety;
- Develop and maintain traffic policies and procedures;
- Provide expert advice to management on matters relating to traffic engineering.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, with a specialization in transportation engineering;
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the field of traffic engineering;
- Strong analytical skills to identify and solve complex traffic problems;
- Excellent communication skills to collaborate with teams and explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders;
- Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software and traffic engineering software (e.g., Aimsun, VISSIM, etc.);
- Experience working with transportation agencies in compliance with environmental regulations and standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineering (PE) license in transportation or civil engineering;
- Experience using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software;
- Experience in transportation planning and modeling;
- Experience with Environmental Impact Reports (EIR);
- Ability to speak multiple languages (including English) to understand people of different cultures and backgrounds.
